Key Ingredients for Halloween Rice Krispie Treats
Be sure to check the recipe card for the full instructions and measurements.
Rice Cereal – An important ingredient in making classic rice krispies. There are different brands of rice cereal you can use, and in my opinion, does not make a big difference in the overall flavor.
Large or Mini Marshmallows – It doesn’t matter what size marshmallows you get, as long as you use the correct measurements when making this recipe.
Unsalted Butter – I like to use good quality butter, like Kerrygold, it just takes the flavor to the next level.
Vanilla Extract – Don’t leave this ingredient out. Vanilla really adds depth to the overall flavor.
White Chocolate or Candy Melts – I like to use white chocolate and color it myself, but feel free to get candy melts in the colors of your choice.

How to Decorate Halloween Rice Krispie Treats
There is no right or wrong way to decorate your rice krispie treats! Get creative, use different cookie cutters to get different shapes, or use different colors to match your theme, and just have fun with it! Either way, I’m sure you and the kiddos will have so much fun creating these!
For each of the decorated treats below, start by cutting your rice krispie treats into squares using a sharp knife.
Ghost Rice Krispies
For the ghost rice krispies, pour some melted chocolate into a small circle on parchment paper, then using the back of a spoon or an offset spatula, spread the chocolate down and out into a ghost shape and allow it to set.
Once set, remove from parchment paper and stick to a rice krispie treat with a little chocolate. For the eyes you can use some black candy melts (and a toothpick or piping bag) or a black edible marker to draw them on.
Boo! Eeek! Rice Krispies
For the other krispy treats – Using a piping bag filled with melted chocolate, drizzle on chocolate or decorate in your choice of colors, Halloween sprinkles, or other festive decorations.
I like to punch out some festive sayings using fondant, with these alphabet stamps. But you can also try hand-piping the words.
Spider Web Rice Krispies
For the spider web treats – in a microwave-safe bowl, melt some marshmallows for 60 seconds. Allow the marshmallows to cool slightly before use.
Spray your hands with some non-stick spray (or you can wear gloves) and grab a glob of melted marshmallow pulling between your fingertips to create webs. Wrap and pull the marshmallow webbing around the rice krispie treat.
To create the spider – coat a marshmallow in your desired colored chocolate and allow it to set, this will be the body. Then with melted chocolate, pipe the legs on parchment paper and stick the body in the center, allow everything to set together. Once set, remove from parchment paper and with a little melted chocolate apply to the rice kripsie treat.
Feel free to use toy spiders instead.
What is the secret to cutting rice crispy treats?
Measure, measure, measure! The best way to get nice clean (square) cuts is to use a ruler. I like using this tool when it comes to cutting my rice krispies, brownies, bars, etc. But you can simply use a ruler and make exact marks on top of the chocolate.
Then using a clean knife, cut using your scores. I do not recommend refrigerating your rice krispies before cutting. Cut into squares, or your desired shape/size, at room temperature, the rice krispie and chocolate should be soft enough to do so.
If you are still having trouble making cuts, run your knife under some hot water and clean off with a napkin. Then follow the scores you made and cut again.
Pro Tips for Best Results
Non-stick spray is your best friend! Spray a little non-stick spray in your baking dish and on your spatula (or hands), this will keep the rice krispie cereal from sticking everywhere.
Get the right chocolate consistency. If your chocolate is too thick or not runny enough add some coconut oil or these paramount crystals.
Storage Instructions
You can store these Halloween Rice Krispie Treats at room temperature for up to 3 days, covered in plastic wrap or in an airtight container. Make sure to store in a cool area to keep the chocolate from melting.
